Petco Love

We collaborate with and support thousands of local animal welfare organizations around the country, and we’ve helped find loving homes for more than 6.5 million animals through in-store adoption events in collaboration with Petco Love, an independent nonprofit impacting lives.

Petco Pet Insurance

Petco offers comprehensive, highly customizable plans backed by one of America’s most trusted pet brands, allowing you to get the right coverage for your budget. Is it, however, the best option for you and your four-legged companion? This review will explain Petco’s rules in detail, including pricing, discounts, supplementary services, claim processing timelines, and more.

Is Petco a place where you can get pet insurance?

In 2017, Petco began offering pet insurance. PetCoach, LLC creates and administers the plans, which are underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company and handled by C&F Insurance Agency, Inc., a Crum & Forster company with an AM Best rating of A.

Petco Animal Supplies Inc. was founded in 1965 to provide wellness care for dogs. Over time, the firm has evolved to include a variety of pet products such as training, grooming, pet food, supplies, and even vet services through its Vetco Clinics. The company now has over 1,000 locations in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Open plans at Petco

An Accident and Illness plan and an Accident-Only plan are available from the company.

Accidents, illnesses, veterinary exam fees, in-office and veterinary clinic diagnostic and testing, chronic conditions, genetic and hereditary conditions, cancer treatment, behavioral problems, alternative therapies, prescribed medications and foods, medical supplies, IV fluids, non-routine dental coverage, surgery, and hospitalization, microchip implementation, and end-of-life expenses are all covered under the Accident and Illness plan.

In every way, the two plans are identical, with the exception that the Accident-Only plan only covers unexpected accidents.

Customers must wait 14 days for their pet insurance to kick in fully. This is true for all types of accidents, illnesses, and orthopedic ailments like ligament problems, knee problems, and hip dysplasia.

Petco also offers a Vital Care Wellness plan, which focuses on a few wellness benefits that the firm feels to be the most important to pet owners. The Vital Care plan also includes a welcome gift of a free bag of food or $25 off one vaccination at a Vetco Clinic, 30% off full-service grooming for dogs at any of the many Petco locations, unlimited wellness exams, and a $10 reward for each month you are on the Vital Care plan to spend in any Petco location.

Exclusions at Petco

Petco, like other pet insurance providers, does not cover pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing curable conditions, on the other hand, are reinstated by the corporation. If your four-legged pet had a pre-existing ailment that wasn’t covered but was recovered from during your insurance and has been symptom-free for 180 days from the date of recovery, Petco will add the condition to your coverage. The following items are also not covered by the company:

  • Ear cropping, claw removal, and tail docking are examples of elective and cosmetic operations.
  • Medication or procedures that are being tested
  • Transplantation of a heart valve or an organ
  • Fillings, caps, root canals, crowns, and implants are examples of aesthetic, cosmetic, orthodontic, or endodontic dental operations.
  • When dental cleanings aren’t utilized to prevent or treat a condition covered by the coverage, they’re not covered.

Pricing at Petco

You can choose from four-yearly coverage limits: $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or limitless, three reimbursement percentages: 70%, 80, or 90%, and three annual deductibles: $100, $250, or $500, depending on the plan you choose. Individual premium prices are determined by the breed, age, and location of the animal.

Discounts at Petco

Enrolling numerous pets from the same family at Petco gets you a 10% discount. A 30-day money-back guarantee is also included. If you pay the first premium but are unhappy with your coverage, you will receive a complete refund. Customers who are not residents of New York and have not made any claims within the last 30 days are eligible for this offer.

Claims and reimbursement times at Petco

Customers have 270 days to submit claims via the company’s online portal and receive reimbursement via mail check or direct bank deposit. They can also request for direct vet bill payment, which means the insurer will pay the veterinarian directly for their services.

Claims are processed in around 30 days by the company. As their claim is handled, the customer will receive email reminders and can track them in their Petco Wellness dashboard.

What we enjoy about this piece of reporting

Each pet insurance coverage comes with a free pet concierge service, which includes advice from Petco’s certified pet health specialists and veterinarian consultants. Policyholders can ask questions about their pet’s health, nutrition, and overall well-being at any time using their account or mobile app.

Petco’s pet insurance policies are rather comprehensive, covering veterinary exam fees, alternative therapies such as acupuncture, behavioral issues, prescription foods, and drugs, and microchip installation.

Another advantage is the short 14-day waiting period for orthopedic disorders. Other pet insurance companies, such as Embrace, require a six-month waiting period.

There are no age restrictions with Petco pet insurance. The advantages of Petco’s pet insurance plans are available to any dog or cat over the age of eight weeks. We also liked that the company’s policies have no lifetime or per-incident payout limits.

Before registering, Petco does not require a veterinarian exam.

The company’s wellness care option, Vital Care can be purchased separately and includes unlimited wellness appointments and grooming discounts.

Your pet is covered when they travel with you in the States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, and other U.S. territories. When you travel with your pet in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, and other US territories, they are insured.

What could be better at Petco?

While other pet insurance companies offer a wide range of preventative care services like spaying/neutering, parasite treatment, lab tests, and dental cleanings, Petco’s Vital Care wellness plan offers only a few items the company feels owners would “really utilize and profit from.”

Petco’s premiums are greater than the national average, especially for purebred dogs and cats living in cities. Bilateral problems involving the knee, meniscus, cruciate ligament, and patella are not covered by the company.

For accidents, there is a 14-day waiting period, which is longer than most other providers. Accidents are covered by Embrace after 48 hours, Pets Best after three days, and Figo after five days, for example.

In comparison to other pet insurers, the claim processing time is also greater. For example, while Petco claims take 30 days to complete, Embrace and USAA claims are routinely processed in 10 to 15 business days.

Is Petco Pet Insurance a Good Investment?

Petco Pet Insurance offers affordable coverage and several customization choices to meet the requirements and budgets of every customer. If you’ve been turned down for pet insurance for elderly pets in the past, this company may be able to help. However, when compared to other insurance carriers, the company’s premiums are higher.
